The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) is the designated official ingest point for all publicly released Visual Information as defined in DoD Instruction 5040.02.
In addition to providing distribution services for released VI, DVIDS also forwards all VI to DIMOC 180 days after submission, for inclusion in the DoD Visual Information Archives, in accordance with the DoD Visual Information Records Schedule.
- All VI sent to DVIDS must be properly cleared for public release by an authorized unit release authority, namely the Public Affairs Officer or designated subordinate personnel.
- Do not send any VI that has not been officially released, or is designated FOUO or higher, to DVIDS.
Two ways to submit VI
1. Web upload
VI is manually uploaded into DVIDS, with the ability to enter captions and metadata into each file after upload. Further training on web upload is available here .
2. FTP/SFTP upload
VI is loaded to DVIDS via FTP/SFTP. Before transmission, all metadata must be embedded in the file using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop or Bridge) or Photo Mechanic. Metadata cross-references for these programs are available via DVIDS and in Chapter 5 of the DoD Visual Information Style Guide .
Further training on FTP/SFTP is available via DVIDS.
Training on all aspects of DVIDS is available at the DVIDS Training Page (registration is required).
If you can’t successfully submit via DVIDS Direct, please contact the Joint Combat Camera Center for assistance.
